As well as checking your teeth we will check the whole of your mouth for signs of infection, gum disease, oral cancer and other mouth conditions therefore even if you have no teeth you should still have regular dental examinations. We encourage you to speak to family members who have not been for some time to encourage them to book an appointment especially those who may be at risk e.g., smokers, heavy drinkers, diabetics etc.
While it is important to visit a dentist on a regular basis at home follow these top tips to help keep your mouth, teeth and gums healthy;
-
Brush your teeth and gums twice a day with a soft/medium tooth brush or ideally an electric toothbrush. Brush before breakfast and especially before bed using fluoride toothpaste. After brushing spit out the toothpaste avoid rinsing with water or mouthwash directly after.
-
-
Reduce the amount of sugary/acidic food and drinks you have - limit these to meal times, as its not just how much sugar and acid that you consume but more importantly the frequency of consumption that causes problems.
-
If you have a child under 7 years of age supervise them when brushing their teeth and ensure that they use a toothpaste that is suitable for their age group.
-
If your child is more than 12 months old use trainer cups rather than bottles.
-
Use sugar free medicines where possible
